The short movie produced in collaboration with Phipps Philms, Twice Owned, was nominated for Best Short as a Finalist in the Christian Worldview Film Festival this March.  Johnathan Schutz (visual effects artist) and Benjamin Owen (producer) were present for the movie screenings and awards event. Audiences commented on its “good story arc” and liked the “watercolor effects”.  In the following month, Twice Owned was awarded an Honorable Mention by The Attic Film Festival, also held in Texas.

“We wanted to produce something for low-cost ministry use,” Owen explained, “and we hope it will provide a good starting point for presenting the Gospel.” The short film and bonus videos are free to view online, including the study guide.

Most recently, Twice Owned was selected for the GloryReelz Christian Film Festival where it received the award for Best Short Film.  “I’m really proud of the finished movie.” said director, Caleb Phipps, who is delighted with the GloryReelz recognition.  Many people volunteered time and property for the making of this movie.  And lead actor, Stone Davis, put in a long weekend for this production.

Twice Owned was designed as a package — with study guide, etc — because we didn’t want to leave the allegory of redemption unexplained.” says Owen.  The bonus content includes a video presentation about the allegory of the sailboat, and a printed study guide helps bring out the meaning behind Twice Owned.  In another of the bonus videos, Caleb Phipps, takes viewers behind the scenes for a glimpse into the heart of Twice Owned.

“Twice Owned presents the essential message of the Gospel in such a clear and creative way,” says music composer, David Michael Hyde. “I am honored to be associated with such a powerful tool that brings glory to Christ and helps expand His Kingdom.”

Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. (Isaiah 45:22)

The new five part “Refracted Glory Bible Study” released earlier this spring.  It adapts the documentary film to a format suitable for group studies.  The study booklet, written by Caleb Rodriguez, takes a slower pace than that of the film, which allows for a deeper exploration of Scripture.

Hummingbirds, whether viewed in rocks or in flight, in laboratories or in backyards, point us to the eternal life only found in Jesus Christ.

“It became clear that the ‘Refracted Glory’ movie was rather hard for churches to use,” says the film’s director, Benjamin Owen; “but we wanted that content to be usable for church groups.”  The solution of a Bible study came through much prayer, and the collaborative efforts of Caleb Rodriguez, David Rives, and others.

The accompanying DVD provides an introduction for each session, with the “Refracted Glory” content referenced in the study booklet.  “You could say the documentary looks mostly at the science, where as the study book is focused mainly on Scripture,” explains Owen.

Each session is rich with scripture and insight, great for stimulating exciting discussions with your family or bible study group.  While hummingbirds may point us to Scripture, it is Scripture which enables us to understand hummingbirds. And in every matter, His word is found reliable and relevant for our daily lives.

Each film selected for the festival was judged independently by at least 5 judges who scored the film using a numbering scale covering up to 16 factors divided between worldview and technical merits.

The Christian Worldview Film Festival “was started in 2014 by the non-profit ministry Media Talk 101 to encourage Christian Filmmakers in their Biblical worldview and the craft of filmmaking. The inaugural five day event featured 33 speakers presenting 50 unique workshops on Christian filmmaking, plus 80 Christian films which played on six different screens. An awards ceremony closed out the week with 13 different awards and a total of $6500 in prizes. The Film Festival had 700 registered attendees for our first year and we anticipate more in attendance for 2015.”

  • RG_BannerAd_DVD1webIt has been exciting to see “Refracted Glory” enjoyed by people from all over and share the life-changing Gospel message through hummingbirds.  We appreciate your help in letting people know about this unique documentary.

We continue to get a good response from audiences and there is always excitement toward the topic of hummingbirds at events.  For most, seeing hummingbirds in slow-motion is enough to interest them… but “Refracted Glory” goes further and leaves people truly in awe.

It is our hope that they are not in awe only of hummingbirds; we want Jesus Christ to be the true focus.  We want people to remember our Creator whenever they see things like hummingbirds; that they might give GOD glory, “who is blessed for ever” (Romans 1).  So tell a friend, tell your family, tell others about the Creator of hummingbirds, who also created us and offers us salvation from sin and death.

The comment we’ve had most is; “loved the ending.”  Yes, praise the Lord!  Because we prayed more over the ending than any other part of the film.  The longest music track is at the end, which also had a great deal of prayer.  The ending is what we wanted people to remember, after watching all of the foundational information.  “Refracted Glory” was made mostly because that ending was possible.

Since release, “Refracted Glory” has increasingly been made available through various online stores and broadcast networks! What will be next for Border Watch Films?  Stay informed with email updates HERE

  • The “Refracted Glory” DVD begins shipping today! It’s been an exciting week leading up to the DVD release, with a huge response at the premiere screening last Tuesday. Thank you all for your support of “Refracted Glory.” Please help us spread the word about this film, which we believe to present an important message.

James Gardner, who appears in the film, said; “I have been looking forward to previewing this production for a long time. And I am happy to say that I am not disappointed. I am particularly pleased how you ended the film with a clear presentation of the Gospel. I think you did a very good job putting this together. And the video editing is impressive.”

The host, David Rives said; “I was asked by Benjamin Owen to host a feature length documentary on Hummingbirds. As I began to do some preliminary research for the project, I realized that there has never been a documentary made about hummingbirds from a “design” perspective. These incredible creatures are so tiny, yet their capabilities are truly marvelous in every way! The films in the past that have aired on PBS and nature channels have been consistently from an evolutionary perspective, assuming that hummingbirds arose by means of natural selection over millions upon millions of years. This film “Refracted Glory” is not only inspirational and educational, but NOTHING LIKE IT HAS EVER BEEN PRODUCED…. Until now! Join me on this journey of discovery by ordering your copy today. With expert interviews, an original film score, animations, slow-motion video, and hosted and narrated by your’s truly!”
